Answered Prayers by Truman Capote

India ink on 11”x14” hot press. April 2023.

This was a “collaboration” with a writer and a text that has not been previously visualized. Foundation Drawing assignment from Professor Stanley Baden at Pasadena City College.

I chose a passage from Truman Capote’s unfinished novella Answered Prayers, in the chapter “La Côte Basque.”

A man stops to talk to Gloria Cooper (née Vanderbilt.) Her friend Carol Matthau realizes that Gloria has no idea with whom she is speaking. Gloria has not recognized her first husband, alleged mobster Pat Di Cicco.

Through research, I was able to put real faces to the fake names Capote used to disguise some characters. Also through diagramming the clues in the text, I could place the diners in their proper banquette tables for the illustration.
